# Mining: change between two surveys

> Six years of a quarry from two public surveys: what changed beyond the level of detection, and the cut and fill volumes.

Video: https://finitor.cl/learn/desktop-mining-change-en.mp4 — The Mormont limestone quarry (Eclépens, Switzerland), airborne LiDAR swissSURFACE3D 2019 and 2025, SWISSIMAGE 2020, © swisstopo. The application measures 1.47 million m³ removed; an independent difference of the two ground surfaces gives 1.46 million m³.

## The comparison

1. Open the earlier survey; in Tools, Compare, type the registration error (how far apart the surveys may sit, from their control or checkpoints).
2. vs cloud… and the later survey: the distance along the surface's normal (M3C2) and, for every spot, its level of detection at 95 % (Lague et al. 2013).

## The result

1. Red rose, blue fell, grey is within the level of detection. The volumes are the cut and fill between the two ground surfaces, counting only significant change.

Classified clouds give volumes of ground only (trees and machines left out). Part of the Finitor Desktop licence.
